Big Brother

The History of Big Brother

Big Brother originated from The Netherlands, where six individuals lived together in a house, and the last person remaining won a grand prize. The public were the ones voting who to eliminate. CBS decided to use the same format for their version of the show. It was created after the success of a similar show, Survivor. However, season one of the show did not do well, so they changed the format to match closer to survivor, having the contestants be the ones making decisions, and season two managed to have better acceptance.

After the second season aired, the show continued to develop, adding new twists, ideas, and themes in the upcoming seasons. Some twists became staples, and the show is still airing every summer to this day. It has a total of 27 mainline seasons, and 5 spinoffs. Other countries soon made their own Big Brother, although majority of them follow the Dutch format of having the public vote. Big Brother seems to be constantly evolving, but the synopsis of it will not. It will always continue to be a social experiment showing how human beings handle living in a house together under major surveillance.
